For the perfect getaway break...
Apr 24, 2009:
The Village Fete was a resounding success. As usual the traditional stalls did well but new this year were...
There is lots to do in and around Hillwell, with some of the best attractions below:
Like its larger cousin, Stonehenge, both the creators and the purpose of the Hillwell Stone Circle remain a mystery.
Situated in a clearing within deep woods, just a few miles from Hillwell, a visit to the Stone Circle makes a great day out.
The site is open all day, entry is free and ample parking is available.
Hillwell Castle was once an important Medieval fortress but is now sadly in ruins.
With a real moat (empty!), a climbable keep and a large courtyard there is plenty to see and explore.
It is worth finding out a little of the history of the castle by taking the tour; as the castle has seen more than its fair share of Kings, Queens battles and sieges.
Entrance is free and there are parking spaces available, but the drawbridge is closed at 6pm!
Hillwell Fort is situated in farmland near the coast and was intended to protect Hillwell from assault by sea.
Like the castle the fort is now in ruins but there is still much to see and it too has seen many battles and sieges.
Hillwell Fort is also free to visit however parking is only available on a nearby street, but it is just a short walk to the fort itself.
